NOWADAYS AN OVERALL OPTIMIZATION OF METAL FORMING PROCESSES DOES NOT ONLY REGARD THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, BUT IS INCREASINGLY FOCUSED ON TRIBOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF FORMING PROCESSES; THEREFORE, THE CONTACT CONDITIONS AND THE SURFACE TREATMENT AT TOOL-WORKPIECE INTERFACE IS GROWING CONSIDERABLY IN IMPORTANCE. IN THIS WORK THREE DIFFERENT SURFACE TEXTURES OF AN ALUMINUM ALLOY AL 6016-T4 WERE CHARACTERIZED BY 2D AND 3D SURFACE ANALYSIS METHODS, AND BASED ON AN EXPERIMENTAL METHOD THAT ALLOWS THE MEASUREMENT OF THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT IN DEPENDENCE ON THE NORMAL STRESS AND RELATIVE SLIDING LENGTH. THE EFFECTS OF THE WORKPIECE SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY ON THE FRICTION AT THE TOOL-WORKPIECE INTERFACE WERE INVESTIGATED.
