THE INFLUENCE OF CUTTING FLUIDS ON THE TOOL LIFE OF CERAMIC INSERTS
Summary :
THE KNOWLEDGE OVER THE PERFORMANCE OF CUTTING FLUIDS WHEN APPLIED TO DIFFERENT WORK MATERIALS AND OPERATIONS IS OF CRUCIAL IMPORTANCE IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE EFFICIENCY OF MOST CONVENTIONAL MACHINING PROCESSES. THIS EFFICIENCY CAN BE MEASURED MAINLY THROUGH CUTTING TOOL LIFE AND WORKPIECE SURFACE FINISH. THEREFORE, CUTTING FLUIDS ARE USED AIMING TO INCREASE TOOL LIFE AND IMPROVE THE SURFACE QUALITY. HOWEVER, THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR PURCHASE, HANDLING AND DISPOSAL ARE LEADING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CUTTING TOOLS WHICH DO NOT REQUIRE THE USE OF CUTTING FLUIDS. IN THIS WORK THE PERFORMANCE OF CUTTING FLUIDS DURING CONTINUOUS TURNING OF HARDENED AISI 4340 STEEL (49 HRC), USING MIXED ALUMINA TOOLS WAS INVESTIGATED FOR THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS: DRY TURNING AND USING SYNTHETIC, SEMI-SYNTHETIC AND EMULSION CUTTING FLUIDS. THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS WERE EVALUATED: TOOL LIFE AND SURFACE FINISH. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT WITH REGARD TO TOOL LIFE, THE EMULSION AND DRY CUTTING GAVE BEST RESULTS. THE BEST SURFACE FINISH WAS OBTAINED WHEN CUTTING FLUIDS WERE USED.
KEYWORDS: CUTTING FLUIDS, HARDENED MATERIALS, CERAMIC TOOLS.
