A STUDY OF MACHINABILITY
OF THE MICROALLOYED STEELS
ABSTRACT. MICROALLOYED STEELS ARE CARBON STEELS WHICH ACQUIRE THEIR HIGH MECHANICAL RESISTANCE PROPERTIES, TOUGHNESS AND DUCTILITY, FROM COMBINED EFFECT OF COMPOSITION AND THERMOMECHANICAL TREATMENT, WHITHOUT QUENCHING AND TEMPERING TREATMENT. THESE STEELS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY THE SMALL ADDITIONS (£ 0,25WT%) (CLINE ET AL., 1986) OF MICROALLOYING ELEMENTS , SUCH AS V, NB, TI, OR A COMBINATION OF THEM, TO A BASIC COMPOSITION OF F-C. THEY WERE DEVELOPED AS AN ECONOMIC ALTERNATIVE TO THE QUENCHED AND TEMPERED STEELS ,AS A RESULT OF LESS PROCESSING STAGES, LESS EXPENSES OF ENERGY DUE TO ELIMINATION OF THE THERMAL TREATMENTS, DECREASE OF THE FLATTENING COSTS AND ELIMINATION OF THE QUENCHING CRACK. THE STUDY OF MACHINABILITY OF MICROALLOYED STEELS IS QUITE IMPORTANT BECAUSE ALL WROUGHT MATERIAL (MAIN APPLICATION OF MICROALLOYED STEELS) ARE MACHINED AFTER THE FORGING TO PRODUCE THE FINAL PIECE. IN SPITE OF THIS, FEW STUDIES EXIST ON THIS SUBJECT, BEING STILL RARE THE EXISTENCE IN THE LITERATURE OF PUBLICATIONS SPECIFICALLY ABOUT MACHINING OF MICROALLOYED STEELS. THE PRESENT WORK PRESENTS A REVIEW ON MACHINING OF MICROALLOYED STEELS, IN TURNING, MILLING AND DRILLING PROCESSES, ACCOMPLISHED IN THE LAST DECADES.
