Summary :
ABSTRACT. THE AIM OF THIS PAPER IS THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE OIL FILM SHAPE OF RECTANGULAR HYDRODYNAMIC SLIDER BEARINGS, LOOKING FOR THE MAXIMUM LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY; THE CORRESPONDING EFFETIVE OIL FILM TEMPERATURE IS SIMULTANEOUSLY ANALYSED. THE STUDY WAS DIRECTED TO THE FOLLOWING OIL FILM SHAPES: FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE POLINOMIALS, EXPONENTIAL, CATENOIDAL, CYCLOIDAL AND TRUNCATED CYCLOIDAL. THE EFFECT OF PROVIDING THE SHOES WITH A PLANE REGION (PARALLEL TO THE MOVING PART) AT THE LEAVING EDGE WAS ALSO INVESTIGATED AND SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY FOR THE FIRST DEGREE POLYNOMIAL OIL FILM SHAPE (TAPERED FLAT-FACE). THE REYNOLD S EQUATION FOR THE HYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION WAS SOLVED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH AN ITERATIVE PROCEDURE TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE EFFECTS OF BOTH THE TEMPERATURES OF THE SUPPLIED AND RECIRCULATED OIL. FOR THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD WAS APPLIED, BY USING LINEAR TRIANGULAR ELEMENT FOR DISCRETIZING THE SOLUTION DOMINIUM.
KEY WORDS: SLIDER BEARING, OPTIMIZATION,OIL FILM SHAPE, FINITE ELEMENT METHOD.
