IN THIS WORK, THE REFRIGERANT GAS LEAKAGE THROUGH THE RADIAL CLEARANCE IN ROLLING PISTON COMPRESSORS IS ESTIMATED BY MODELING THE OIL-REFRIGERANT GAS MIXTURE FLOW. TRANSIENT ASPECTS OF THE FLOW ARE CONSIDERED BY INTRODUCING TIME-VARYING PRESSURE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COMPRESSION AND THE SUCTION CHAMBERS, TIME-VARYING TANGENTIAL VELOCITY OF THE ROLLING PISTON AND TIME-VARYING RADIAL CLEARANCE (THIS OCCURS WHEN SETTING THE PUMP DURING THE COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY). THESE PARAMETERS ARE OBTAINED BY MODELING THE COMPRESSION PROCESS OF THE GAS AND THE ROLLING PISTON DYNAMICS AND BY USING GEOMETRIC RELATIONS OF THE PUMP COMPONENTS. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE REFRIGERANT LEAKAGE THROUGH THE RADIAL CLEARANCE PREDICTED WITH THE PRESENT MODEL IS 26 TO 81% LOWER THAN THAT OBTAINED WITH CONSTANT RADIAL CLEARANCE.
