HYDRODYNAMIC AND RHEOLOGY OF A DILUTE EMULSION WITH HIGH VISCOSITY RATIO
Summary :
THE SMALL DEFORMATION THEORY IS APPLIED FOR STUDYING THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF A DILUTE EMULSION UNDERGOING A SIMPLE SHEAR FLOW. THIS ARTICLE SHOWS THE LINK BETWEEN THE MACRORHEOLOGY WITH THE DEFORMATION AND ORIENTATION OF THE DROPLETS BY THE FLOW (MICROMECHANICS). THE SHAPE AND THE INTERFACIAL VELOCITY OF A STATIONARY DROP IS USED TO COMPUTE THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE DROP TO THE EFFECTIVE STRESS TENSOR OF THE EMULSION. THE OFF-DIAGONAL SHEAR COMPONENT AND THE NORMAL STRESS DIFFERENCES ARE CALCULATED. THE THEORY IS COMPARED WITH RESULTS FROM NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS AT A HIGH VISCOSITY RATIO. AN IMPORTANT CONCLUSION IS THAT A DILUTE EMULSION COMPOSED BY VISCOUS DROPS EXHIBITS SHEAR-THINNING AND ELASTIC BEHAVIOR AT MODERATE SHEAR RATES.
