 Titulo:
DEVELOPMENT OF FIBERGLASS REINFORCED EPOXI AND ALUMINA COMPOSITE PLATES FOR BALLISTIC PROTECTION

Resumo :
AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BEHAVIOR OF COMPOSITE ARMOR PLATES IS PRESENTED. VARIOUS TYPES OF COMPOSITE PLATES WERE PRODUCED AIMING AT THE OPTIMIZATION IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE IMPACT. THE PLATES CONSIST OF POLYMERIC LAMINATES REINFORCED BY FIBERGLASS WITH SMALL ALUMINA CERAMIC PLAQUES IN FRONT OF THEM. SOME VARIATIONS ON THE LAMINATE WERE STUDIED, SUCH AS THE COMPOSITION OF THE RESIN, THE FIBER/MATRIX RATIO, THE TYPE OF FIBER AND LAYERS WITH DIFFERENT VALUES OF RESIN RIGIDITY. THE ARMOR PERFORMANCE WAS EVALUATED THROUGH BALLISTIC TESTS USING THE 7.62 X 51 MM (308 WINCHESTER) AMMUNITION. A NON-DESTRUCTIVE TECHNIQUE (TRANSPARENCY TO LIGHT) WAS USED IN ORDER TO QUANTIFY THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE IMPACT. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPOSITE PLATES WERE RELATED TO THE TESTES VARIABLES. KEY WORDS: COMPOSITE ARMORS, BALLISTIC IMPACT, COMPOSITE PLATES.
