 Titulo:
DESIGN OF RADIAL LIP SEALS TEST MACHINE

Resumo :
RADIAL LIP SEALS ARE VERY COMMON MACHINE ELEMENTS. NEVERTHELESS, THERE IS NOT YET AN INCONTESTABLE THEORY TO EXPLAIN THE LUBRICATION AND SEALING MECHANISMS IN THE CONTACT ZONE SEAL-SHAFT. TEMPERATURE, CONTACT PRESSURE, SURFACE ROUGHNESS, DYNAMIC AND STATIC SHAFT ECCENTRICITIES, SHAFT ROTATIONS AND LUBRICANT PROPERTIES ARE IMPORTANT PARAMETERS TO DETERMINE THE TRIBOLOGICAL CONDITIONS IN THE SEALING ZONE. THE USUAL CONTACT WIDTH BETWEEN SHAFT AND SEAL IS NARROWER THAN 0,2 MM AND THE FLUID THICKNESS DOESN T REACH 1 MM. THEREFORE, IT S NOT EASY TO REALIZE EXPERIMENTS TO ACHIEVE PRECISE RESULTS ABOUT THE WORKING CONDITIONS IN THE SEALING ZONE. A TEST MACHINE WAS BUILT AT UFRJ FOR TESTING RADIAL LIP SEALS WITH 80 MM DIAMETER AND SHAFT ROTATIONS UP TO 4,200 RPM. THE FRICTIONAL TORQUES FROM THE RADIAL LIP SEAL AND THE LUBRICANT BATH TEMPERATURES CLOSE TO THE CONTACT ZONE CAN BE MEASURED. THE TEST MACHINE IS QUITE OPERATIONAL AND ITS FIRST RESULTS ARE PRESENTED.
